Rainy days can be hard for little ones stuck inside, but there is no need to stress when you have NuFun Activities. Make a gloomy day bright by bringing the outside inside with this adorable, “My First Garden” planter set using NuFun Activities Transfer Paper for Wood.
Learn how you can create your very own personalized garden set in just a few simple steps below!
Step 1: Gathering Your Supplies
You can visit your local home & garden store to pick up your unfinished wood toolbox, wooden plant labels, plant seeds, potting-soil, a few small clay pots, and a pack of NuFun Activities Transfer Paper for Wood here:
While most wooden crafts require you to paint in order to add pops of color or graphics, our Transfer Paper for Wood uses a first-of-its-kind, patented technology to transfer any image beautifully onto all unfinished wood surfaces in the comfort of your own home, allowing you to create vibrant, custom wood decor without the mess (or needing to be a masterful painter!)
Step 2: Creating Your Design
Once you have gathered all your supplies, it’s time to create your custom graphics! Choose any design space you feel comfortable with, from Cricut, Adobe, to a simple 8.5x11 Word Document. Your design can include any colors, graphics or images you like. Add a personal touch with your child’s name, a family nickname, or make a gift for your favorite plant-lover.
For this set, we designed all four sides of our wooden planter with a flower graphic and the words “My First Garden,” along with 4 wooden plant labels so we would know what plant is growing where!
You can download our graphics here:
Step 3: Printing Your Design
You don’t need any fancy equipment to use NuFun Activities Transfer Paper for Wood. All our transfer papers print on standard inkjet and laser printers.
Print your image on the non-glossy, unlined side of the transfer sheet. To cover a larger surface, like the long side of our garden tool box, we recommend splitting the graphic into two sheets of transfer paper. You do not need to mirror your design before you print on Transfer Paper for Wood.
Step 4: Cutting Out The Graphics
Once you have printed out all your graphics, check the sizing to make sure everything aligns with your wooden box and labels before cutting. To cut out your graphics, you can use any pair of scissors - or a digital cutter such as a Cricut or Silhouette - making all NuFun Activities Transfer Paper perfect for the DIY beginner or the expert crafter!
Step 5: Ironing On The Graphics
Next, you will want to carefully peel the backing off your printed transfer paper, then lay it flat, design facing UP, directly onto the wood. Cover it with the included parchment paper sheet.
To iron, grab any household iron, or your heat press, and set it to the hottest setting (usually Linen). Using firm, even pressure, hold the iron onto each area of the sheet while making sure to lift the iron completely before pressing onto a new position. Never jiggle or drag your iron across the transfer paper! Make sure to get every edge and corner.

Your design is fully transferred when all white/blank areas of the paper become transparent. You can lift a small corner to peak and see how it’s looking, but press it back down and keep going if it’s not ready.
Once your transfer is complete, set your iron to the side, but leave the parchment paper sheet covering your transfer until it has fully cooled. Once cool, you can now carefully peel off the parchment paper, revealing your custom garden set!
Repeat the process for all 4 sides of the garden toolbox and your plant labels.
Step 6: Plant Your Garden and Watch It Grow:
Now that you’ve completed transferring all the pieces to your set, it’s time to grow your garden!
Fill each clay pot with soil, seeds, and water before pushing your plant labels into the soil and placing the pots in the garden box.
The fun has just begun! Your kids will love learning how to care for and watch their new plants grow. And you can sit back, relax and enjoy an excuse to stay cozy indoors (we all secretly love stormy weather!), knowing you made a rainy day memorable with a personalized wooden craft your family can cherish forever.
Tips!:
-
Customers should always conduct testing before completing their intended transfer to ensure proper print setting, heating element heat is set to correct temp (some irons/presses vary in heat), and to make sure that the completed transfer meets expectation. Irons with steam holes may leave the transfers with uneven transferred areas.
-
Transfer is intended for a rustic look.
-
If you pull parchment off of composite before it is completely cool, there is a possibility that you may lift some areas of your transfer.
