DIY - If You Can Read This Socks

I have been seeing these “if you can read this… etc” socks all over the place on Pinterest, Etsy, you name it. Well during the holiday season, what I really want my DIY socks to command onlookers to bring me is our family friend Kyle’s eggnog. I feel like everyone has that one recipe during the holidays that their circle just goes bananas over, for me its this eggnog. I’d let you taste it, but I’m keeping it all for myself. Anyway, the fun thing about these DIY socks is that you can personalize them for whatever your special recipe is!

Did I mention that they are also super easy to make? So, let’s get started.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 pair of cotton or poly blend socks. Make sure these are big enough that they don’t stretch out a ton when you put them on. This will help them stay nice longer.
  • 1 Sheet NuFun Activities Dark Fabric Transfer Paper
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Cutting machine such as a Cricut or Silhouette
  • Weeding Mask – optional but this makes the process a zillion times easier.
  1. Create your design. Microsoft word works great since you’re just printing words. Create a cut file for your cutting machine.
  2. Cut your design. Simply lay your transfer paper on the mat of your cutting machine with the white (print) side facing up and cut that way if you want plain white letters. If you want another color – or even a pattern – simply print the color on the whole transfer page and cut like you would normally!
  3. Weed the transfer. This is super easy to do with NuFun Dark Fabric Transfer, but still, take your time so as to not pull up any of the lettering! I used an exacto knife to weed the insides if the letters.

  4. Place your weeding mask over the transfer for one sock at a time. Press the weeding mask securely onto the transfer so that each letter peels off easily.
  5. Cut the excess weeding mask off the transfer and place it down on the bottom of one of the socks.
  6. Iron your transfer onto the sock. With the weeding mask, it is not necessary to use parchment paper, however if you do not use a weeding mask, you MUST use parchment paper.

  7. Peel the mask. Because weeding masks are sticky, be careful when peeling. If the transfer tries to come with the weeding mask instead of sticking to the sock… keep ironing! When the transfer is secure on the sock, it will stay there and NOT on the weeding mask.
  8. Follow steps 4-7 for the next sock and ta-da! You now have the most adorable “if you can read this socks”!
